We reported earlier about the new GEC438 Commander Programmable Looper, and now very happy to say that it is complete and will be shipping first units to the United States the end on October. This is newest version of the Moen Commander and predecessor to the excellent Moen GEC434.

While multi effects processors can offer a great advantage over individual pedals in terms of versatility and bang for your buck, many complain this is accomplished by sacrificing tone and often requiring significant programming and planning to get the fullest tones out of one. One the other hand, some of the bypass buffers of individual pedals are real tone thieves and even true bypass pedals can load down a long signal chain significantly. But some of those little pedals sound incredible and being able to mix and match effects from different manufacturers is often the key in finding one’s tonal Nirvana. What’s a pedal junky to do? Pick up a true bypass looper, and the new MOEN Guitar Effect Commander (GEC) 438 may be the ideal solution.
MOEN is an effects manufacturer based in Hong Kong which offers a full line of pedals of which the GEC is the newest addition. The unit offers relay controlled true bypass for each of it’s four loops and a dedicated tuner output. However, as effects board guru Pete Cornish argues in “The Case Against Ture Bypass”, a single buffered bypass often offers an advantage especially in long signal runs. Well, the MOEN GEC438 offers both buffered and unbuffered inputs allowing you the user to make the choice (all the individual loops remain true bypass). Very cool. But we’ve just scratched the surface…
The GEC 438 is also programmable offering any 3 of the 4 loops active at a time which can be stored in 1 of the 8 presets which are organized in 2 banks of 4. The icing on the cake though is allowing the loops to be programmed in any order. So why is that a big deal? Well, if you’re a more experimental player you’re probably already working out all the permutations in your head but here are a couple examples for the less imaginative. So you’ve got a delay pedal sitting in a loop and an overdrive in another. The standard effects chain feeds the delay into the overdrive. At the end of a song, you max out the repeat level to force self oscillation. How about kicking it up a notch and feed the oscillating feedback into an overdrive? Do you have a multi effects processor without an onboard loop and always wanted to try the famous 4 cable method? Now you can by running a loop output into your amp’s input and the amp’s effect loop out to the loop return, setting up a secondary loop with the amp modeling processor of your choice, and run the GEC 438 output back to the amp effects loop return. Now you can toggle between your amp’s preamp and the modeling preamp and still have two additional loops for additional pedals. How about using loops A and B to switch between 2 amps and loading up C and D with effects? Sweetness!
Build quality is nice and solid and the use of relay controlled switching limits the chances of switch failure and the device runs of a standard 9 volt DC power supply. During the review, I found the unit to be slightly picky about power supplies exhibiting a bit of noise with one particular supply, so partnering the unit with a good low noise power supply is a must. Our review model is a prototype, but these will be hitting the streets any day now and anyone looking for a flexible true bypass looper needs to check these out.
Pros: Incredibly flexible, solid construction, compact size Cons: Sensitive to noisy power supplies.

Moen Overdrive and Fuzz Moo Review

Ran across this unsolicited review of the Moen Fuzz Moo Fuzz and the Moen Overdrive and thought I would share it as well here in this forum.

In the crowded world of effects some basic sounds may be overlooked, but both of these offer a good basis for your overall tone and for sure worth a look.
We appreciate the writeup here.

MOEN Overdrive and Fuzz Moo

MOEN is a relative newcomer to the world of guitar effects founded in 2005. Located in Hong Kong, the company offers a full range of effects pedals including some very innovative models such as their Raw Tube Drive which is advertised as the world’s smallest high voltage tube overdrive and Stage Control line of programmable true bypass loops. We’ll look at two pedals from their vintage series today, the MO-OD Overdrive and MO-FM Fuzz Moo.

Overdrive MO-OD

Ok, so it’s got perhaps the most generic name possible. And the pedal has a fairly utilitarian look to match in spite of its bullet-shatter-glass cosmetics. The unit even features all the standard stuff you’d expect to see on an overdrive pedal: a trio of controls (volume, tone, and drive), red led indicator, 9v dc power jack, and a handy, thumb-screwed battery cover on the back. The MOEN Overdrive is built in a hefty metal enclosure with an extremely solid feel to it giving me confidence that it won’t crumble under even the harshest conditions.

For my initial audition of the pedal’s tones, I cranked the gain and tone to max and set the level around noon, plugged it up with my trusty SX SST57, and into a Vox Pathfinder 15r set for a subtle breakup. Engaging the pedal, well, to say I was impressed isn’t quite a fair description. I was darn near hypnotized! After close to an hour of playing, I stopped to truly evaluate what I was hearing. I could hear a strong similarity to a Tubescreamer so I plugged up my TS9 for comparison and there was none. The MO-OD blew it away. It’s got all the midrange sweetness of the Tubescreamer with seemingly more compression yet the highs and lows remain intact unlike the weaker low end and predominant mid range hump of the traditional Tubescreamer. Hmmm…

I spent quite some time trying to figure out what exactly is going on until I realized that the pedal accomplishes its seemingly contradictory transparent vibe by passing a preset amount of the bypassed signal through the pedal even when engaged. Brilliant! However, as a result if you’re playing a really clean amp the effect is a little obvious as the overdriven and clean signal can be heard as two fairly distinct sounds. But when your target amp has a bit or grit dialed up this thing is simply magical. On top of it all, the pedal has a bunch of volume on tap for those who enjoy pummeling the front end of their amp.

Anyone looking for a Tubescreamer styled overdrive with a bit more transparency should definitely check this pedal out. The MOEN Overdrive is a bit of a tonal paradox: beautifully compressed and colored yet transparent at the same time. Highly recommended.

Fuzz Moo MO-FM

Ok, any pedal with bizarre name and an affordable price tag is going to get some of my attention and I don’t think I’ve heard another pedal outside of the Way Huge line with such an amusing name. The pedal is adorned with a rather serious cow skull graphic for having such a whimsical name, but it’s about how these things sound not look right? The pedal’s layout and features fall right in line with the MO-OD with the aforementioned pedal’s gain knob relabeled as sustain.

Plugged up, MOEN was definitely inspired by the Big Muff rather than Fuzz Face. However, I always found the Big Muff to be a rather muddy sounding pedal with an overly tubby low end. Even the name sounds muddy to me. The MO-FM has a leaner low end by comparison and pushes the gain up to 11. The filter sweep styled tone control will be familiar to Big Muff fans, but like the gain range seems to be wider without getting piercing on the top end nor muddy on the low end.

I paired the Fuzz Moo with everything I have. This pedal is a weapon with more in common with a laser than a traditional fuzz pedal. It obliterates any tonal signature of your guitar supplanting its devastatingly aggressive roar. Sustain is actually a perfect name for the gain knob on this little beasty as when it’s cranked up to max notes seem to hang on for days. This isn’t something for those seeking subtlety. No, this pedal is all about in your face, slicing fuzz and would be a perfect complement to the pedal boards of those seeking more non-conventional tones ala Muse or Radio Head. I could also see fans of industrial and death metal really getting some mileage out of the Fuzz Moo.

The MOEN MO_FM Fuzz Moo isn’t for everyone. But the tonally adventurous should seek one out. Combined with some filtering and/or octave effects, you’ll definitely be getting double takes from audience members wondering who’s playing the synth.

Moen Anole Looper

Wanted to post this short video here from Martin Behr on the benefits of having Loop control for fast song shift which really helps with tonal possibilites and timing of different tones.

The Anole is an excellent choice as it provides fast shift switching, silent tuner out, and True Bypass construction. True Bypass is excellent for running your vintage pedals along with more modern ones.

The MOEN ANOLE LOOPER allows the player to chain his/her effects in selected preset configurations. Instead of having to click on and off multiple pedals in a song, the guitarist need only select the configuration through the dual looper pedal. This dual path is very versatile and will come in handy many times over.
Three Loop Paths:
The guitarist can configure his effect chains in three loop paths.
Path1: Bypass – Loop A
Path 2: Bypass – Loop B
A or B Loop Single Toggle Switch (for one click control of A or B)
Path 3: Plus...... in-line jack for Tuner !! You can silent switch the box and bypass to the tuner for fast tuning whenever you need it.... great idea.

Just as an example, Loop A can be used as the Drive loop. Pedals such as an Overdrive or Distortion can be chained in this loop. Loop B can be used to put cleaner Modulation effects in such as Chorus, Echo or Delay configurations..... Or pretermined "sound sets" on either side loop for fast song switching.
When Loop A is selected, the Overdrive and Distortion chain will be turned on and when Loop B is selected, the chorus and delay chain will be turned on. One switch controls both sides for fast tone shifting. Very cool........

We all know that many effect manufacturers have taken a lot of liberties lately in calling some Delays "True Analog" when in fact they are only Digital chips with "Analog voicing" While some of these sound really nice and offer some authentic tones..... they are not truly Analog.

The new Moen unit is a true Analog Delay that utilizes a real BBD chip, not commonly found in most units these days. Using a BBD chip is the only way to achieve true Analog and capture that truly authentic and warm rounded sound.

This board loves Strats and I love this board. Soon I'll put up an in depth demonstration of how the GEC434 works and how I have set it up to control the whole rig. This is new GEC434 Guitar Commander from Moen. This is a very versatile unit capable of many different set up configurations and you will be seeing more on this great switching unit shortly and should be available now as of this writing. But for starters I have included a part one here of the great Martin Behr working with the Commander in a live situation. On this gig I was having a lot of fun using my new pedalboard featuring the brand new MOEN GEC434 looper. My strats are plugged into the board and from there go directly into a Laney head and Marshall cab. I absolutely love the sound I'm getting with my strats and this board!

The Moen FUZZ MOO and Bassist Bret Calder

The Moen Fuzz Moo has been finding it's way onto more pedal boards and stages as the word spreads out about the MOO's powerful tone and value.

This time in the very capable hands of Mr. Bret Calder, an incredible bassist from the New York area. Bret has been involved in many notable projects in his career and has now found home in the band I,Parasite, where he has spent the last 5 years honing his sound.

This year, the band will release it's 3rd album, " The Sick Are Not Healing"

I, Parasite's sound is great mixture of atmospheric waves and raw power where Bret (and the Fuzz Moo) really come through.

A bit of the band's history:

For over ten years I, Parasite has been making aggressive, atmospheric, and experimental electronic/rock sounds. Starting out as a duo in 1997, co-founders Justin Butts and Christopher Jon released Turin and Horseslayer on a small indie label. After parting ways in 2001, Chris went on to release On This Cold Floor on his own DARKVISIONMEDIA label in mid 2003. The album received critical acclaim from all over the world and led to Chris working with Grammy nominated producer and Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano on Cradle Of Filth's Thornography.

Now I, Parasite is preparing to release their third full length album, The Sick Are Not Healing (which includes an appearance from Caggiano on the song "The Stone Doctor"). For this Christopher has assembled a new band: longtime live bassist Bret Calder, Nino (guitar), Brandon (acoustic and electronic drums), and Michael Renfield (keyboards). Expect more from I, Parasite – the band – in 2009.

Martin Behr and the Moen Holy Choir

This the great Moen endorser Martin Behr again with the Moen Holy Choir Chorus.

We had mentioned him in an earlier post and you should see a link to his home site there as well. Truly a that gifted guitar player and now a Moen endorser as well! There will be more pics of his pedalboard to come that will incorporate the Moen Violent Metal and maybe some others.

Here is a little info on the official announcement and Martin's Bio:

Martin has released 2 instrumental CDs as a solo artist and is currently recording his third solo CD. He gigs with the Iron Maiden-Tribute-Band "KILLERZ" and the Rock-Band "Sunny Skies". Besides teaching, his schedule also includes playing live and studio sessions.
In 1992 he joined the Rock-Band BABY'S IN BLACK, who released the CD "Between" in 1995. After the breakup of REVERSE, he started working on his first solo-CD "Keeping the balance" which was released in 1994. His versatile profile and interest in different musicial styles got him some gigs with iranian singer/composer Siavash Ghomeyshi and he composed and recorded two soundtracks for the computer-games "MAX!" and "Mobility"; he even played dark wave with Danger de mort on two CDs and live.
In 1999 he realesed his second instrumental album "Law of the jungle" again featuring his favourite musicians Rolf Sander on bass and Alex Bisch (Martingan) on drums. Martin has played the german Jemfest three times, sharing the bill with shredding buddies Ricky Garcia (LaFee), Marcel Coenen (Sun Caged) and Eric Vandenberg (writer for "Guitar"-Mag). In 2002 he played guitar on the pop-rock album "Catwalk Autobahn" by Oliver Burg.
November 2008, Martin became MOEN Endorser.

The Moen "Uni-Comp" Bias Control Compressor

This weeks featured effect is Moen's Uni-Comp Compressor. This is a welcome addition to any one's effect arsenal. The Uni-Comp has been getting great player reviews from both guitar and bass player alike. It is really one of the best compressors out there and certainly in the price range of it's competitors. Single lines runs become clear and present and make those power chords sting as well. Some compressors simply "squeeze" the sound (and the volume). Not so with the Uni-Comp as it compresses with clarity and almost "zero" background noise. The Bias Knob features LED "clipping" and you can dial in the Bias that best suits you an your instrument. A must have for all most all styles of music... and effective for both Guitar and Bass.

**Note the Uni-Comp has been getting good reviews for bass applications and has been commented on through various bass talk forums. Definitely worth a look for all you bass players out there as well**

Just wanted to update here on another Moen YouTube video that comes via an exceptional German guitarist named Martin Behr. You will see he is using the Moen Violent Metal (generation 1) only to pull an excellent tone for this sound sample! The tone of the Moen Violent Metal is very strong and you can tell he is very much pleased with the sound.

A very strong statement from such an excellent guitarist! Moen will rock you......

Most of you have visited Harmony Central for sure, but there be some who have not. This is great website for actual player reviews and comments for most all guitar effects. Of course you should always take the comments for what they are, but some posts have gone into great detail on why they like a certain effect (and in some cases, whey they do not) but it is a great way to get a "feel" for a product before you jump into a purchase. Just had a comment from a studio who had recently used the Fuzz Moo for one of their clients. As a test, they placed the Moo along side a Big Muff and another insanely expensive boutique Fuzz for sonic comparison. After running all three blindly and this musician having his pick of the best tone he heard from the three, he picked the Moo! Stating both power and warmth. The studio was pleasantly surprised and confirmed what they were hearing as well. Great tone and a great value... indeed a Big Muff eater !!
